The Believing Game by Eireann Corrigan

From Goodreads: A private academy. A cult leader. A girl caught in the middle.

After Greer Cannon discovers that shoplifting can be a sport and sex can be a superpower, her parents pack her up and send her off to McCracken Hill-a cloistered academy for troubled teens. At McCracken, Greer chafes under the elaborate systems and self-help lingo of therapeutic education. Then Greer meets Addison Bradley. A handsome, charismatic local, Addison seems almost as devoted to Greer as he is to the 12 steps. When he introduces Greer to his mentor Joshua, she finds herself captivated by the older man's calm wisdom. Finally, Greer feels understood.
But Greer starts to question: Where has Joshua come from? What does he want in return for his guidance? The more she digs, the more his lies are exposed. When Joshua's influence over Addison edges them all closer to danger, Greer decides to confront them both. Suddenly, she finds herself on the outside of Joshua's circle. And swiftly, she discovers it's not safe there.

The Steam Mole (Cuttlefish #2) by Dave Freer

The Steam Mole (Cuttlefish #2) by Dave Freer
Publisher: Pyr
Publish Date:  December 4, 2012
Pages: 300
ISBN #978-1616146924

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Here we pick up with Tim Barnabus and Clara Calland after they leave the Cuttlefish in Australia.

While waiting for the Cuttlefish to be services, all the men take jobs in Australia.  Tim goes to work underground, in the tunnels, assuming it will be pretty much like working the Cuttlefish.  He's treated poorly due to being Black and is soon thrown off the Mole, to strike out on his own in the desert.

Clara's mother falls ill and Clara is left with the local governor.

Meanwhile, Duke Malcolm has transported Clara's father to a prison in Eastern Australia to bait Clara to come see him so that the Duke can get her mother's invention.

Clara and Tim manage to find each other and try to stay out of trouble while helping her parents, making sure Westralia isn't invaded at the same time.

I really loved CUTTLEFISH, but this story was a bit too descriptive of the lands to keep me entertained.  I think I wanted more of the human aspect.  It's still good and hopefully there will be a third that's an excellent blend of the two: human aspect and descriptiveness.

Elemental by Antony John

From Goodreads:  Sixteen-year-old Thomas has always been an outsider. The first child born without the power of an Element—earth, water, wind or fire—he has little to offer his tiny, remote Outer Banks colony. Or so the Guardians would have him believe.

In the wake of an unforeseen storm, desperate pirates kidnap the Guardians, intent on claiming the island as their own. Caught between the plague-ridden mainland and the advancing pirates, Thomas and his friends fight for survival in the battered remains of a mysterious abandoned settlement. But the secrets they unearth will turn Thomas’ world upside-down, and bring to light not only a treacherous past but also a future more dangerous than he can possibly imagine.
