I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I love prequels that really show that the author had thought out everything, that he didn't decide to make up back story AFTER he already wrote a book.  This is a perfect prequel.  Mr. Marion really makes you care about these characters.  Seeing where they were years before WARM BODIES was amazing.

R 'came to' as a zombie, but the scene left me with questions. I think it was meant to, he had a life before he became R and now it's over and he's moving on.  We may never find out how he came to be where he was, what events led to him becoming a zombie.  But I want to know!

Julie is twelve years old and traveling with her parents.  Her dad is military and is teaching her how to kill and keep herself safe.  Her mom is trying to play games with her and keep her a little girl.

Nora is traveling with her little brother, no adults at all.  Her brother doesn't remember any life before the world changed and Nora is barely keeping them alive.

We get our first glimpse of Bonies and it's spectacularly scary!  Those things give me nightmares!

It was fascinating to see how R fought the instincts to devour people, but then a minute later he'd be back to wanting to eat people again.  It was a constant battle for him to not give in, yet he has to.  It seems that even though so many turned into zombies, some were higher functioning from the beginning.

It was also very interesting to see how R and M met and how they were still 'friends' in WARM BODIES.

Marion's writing is haunting.  I couldn't stop thinking about this story and I hope there's more after WARM BODIES.

  1. Oh yay! We love good before/after/between novellas too. And we love that they're becoming more common. :)

If you like the Girl of Fire and Thorns series, SHATTERED MOUNTAIN is a great novella.
