Earthbound (Earthbound #1) by Aprilynne Pike
Publisher: Razorbill

From Goodreads:  Tavia Michaels is the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed her parents. When she starts to see strange visions of a boy she’s never spoken with in real life, she begins to suspect that there’s much about her past that she isn’t being told.

Tavia immediately searches for answers, desperate to determine why she feels so drawn to a boy she hardly knows. But when Tavia discovers that the aunt and uncle who took her in after her parents' death may have actually been responsible for the plane crash that killed them--and that she may have been the true intended victim--she flees for the safety of Camden, Maine, where the boy she sees in her visions instructs her to go.

Now, Tavia is on the run with no one to trust. No one, that is, except for her best friend and longtime crush, Benson.

Tavia feels torn between the boy who mysteriously comes to her at night and the boy who has been by her side every step of the way. But what Tavia doesn't know is that the world is literally falling apart and that to save it she will have to unite with the boy in her visions. Only problem? To do so would mean rejecting Benson's love. And that's the one thing Tavia Michaels swore she'd never do.

All Our Pretty Songs (Pretty Songs #1) by Sarah McCarry

When Will is robbed by those same villains, Meg disguises herself as "Mack" again--telling Will that Mack is her twin brother--in order to help Will recover his money.   Bubble World by Carol Snow

From Goodreads:  Freesia’s life is perfect. She lives on the beautiful tropical island of Agalinas, surrounded by idyllic weather, fancy dress shops, and peacocks who sing her favorite song to wake her up in the morning. She has so many outfits she could wear a different one every day for a year and not run out.

Lately things on the island may have been a bit flippy: sudden blackouts, students disappearing, even Freesia’s reflection looking slightly . . . off. But in Freesia’s experience, it’s better not to think about things like that too much.

Unfortunately for her, these signs are more than random blips in the universe.

Compliance (Dust Chronicles #2) by Maureen McGowan
Publisher: Amazon Childrens Publishing
Publish Date:  June 4, 2013
Pages: 378
ISBN: 978-1477816530

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Glory is a double agent. She's training to be a Compliance Officer in the domed city, while rescuing Deviants secretly.  Glory comes off as stronger, yet more confused, very realistic, in this story.

Cal is good, but how will he be when he finds out the truth about Glory?  Will he still want her?  Or will he just push her away?

The villian was a little predictable, but otherwise the story was good.

The second book begins with Tess traveling to the Isolationist camp.

A lot of the book is taken up by flashbacks and how Tess feels.  Depending on how flashbacks are done, I enjoy them.  These were functionally fine, but I was annoyed by the subject matter.

The world building was good on the physical things, but the people and emotional side of things were a bit sketchy.

I didn't like Tess' judgemental attitude toward Sharon - the only other female that can reproduce.  Judge not, Tess!

Callie Lane dies when she was 17 years old and was selected to be a Guardian. Callie must attend Guardian School and learn from her mistakes so that she can help her Watched (person she looks over).

The best part was learning about the Guardians lives and hearing about their mistakes and what they learned from them. I enjoyed the characters, they were decently done and much like an average teenager.  But ones that had to face their mistakes right now.

Definitely looking forward to reading the next installment!

Happily Never After (Savannah Shadows #1) by Missy Fleming

Happily Never After (Savannah Shadows #1) by Missy Fleming
Publisher: Melange Books
Publish Date: February 6, 2013
Pages: 180
ISBN: 978-1612355597

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Quinn is 17 years old and believes in ghosts. She actually goes ghost hunting, but hasn't had a really scary experience...yet.

This is a dark retelling of Cinderella.  There's a wicked stepmother and two evil stepsisters.  The scariness is subtle, escalating slowly.  It was really well done.  It's hard to have that level of scariness that isn't cheesy or gory, well done!

The characters were well written, but the story is too short to do them justice.  Also, just a small thing, but a different cover would make a huge difference.

The Photo Traveler by Arthur J. Gonzalez

The Photo Traveler by Arthur J. Gonzalez
Publisher: Fahrenheit Publishing
Publish Date: February 20, 2013
Pages: 352
ISBN: 978-0988891611

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

The premise is a great one - a group of people that have the ability to travel through photos to different places and times.  Awesome, right?

Gavin is adopted. His adoptive mother died, his adoptive dad turned into a drunk. He runs away after his dad beats him up again and he's looking for money or anything to help himself to and finds information about his birth family.

Gavin doesn't really show any great growth throughout the story. He's impulsive, screws things up - sometimes it seems on purpose. I didn't care for Gavin, he just seemed dumb at times, not real teenage boy dumb, but 'grown up trying to think like a teenage boy' dumb.

There's a group of 'evil' photo travelers also.  They want the vials of fluid that seem to hold the secret to photo traveling.  Gavin refuses to give the vials his family has to the other group.

I think that the characters need a bit of development and the plot needs some tweaking also.

Alien Legends - A Selection from the Repository of Imagination by Gill Shutt

Alien Legends - A Selection from the Repository of Imagination by Gill Shutt
Publisher: CreateSpace
Publish Date: March 7, 2013
Pages: 274
ISBN# 978-1481135375

I thought that the cover art was beautiful and the concept - give a story, get a story - was really good.  I love well-written alien stories, thanks to Ray Bradbury.

However, these stories did not fire my imagination.  I didn't even read all of the stories because I got tired of slogging through the ones I did read.  Remember, this is just MY opinion.  The writing is good, I think the stories just need some tweaking for excitement.

The After Girls by Leah Konen

The After Girls by Leah Konen
Publisher: Merit Press
Publish Date: April 18, 2013
Pages: 304
ISBN: 978-1440561085

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Three bff's: Ella, Astrid and Sydney.  They have the summer after high school graduation all planned out.  Then Astrid commits suicide and the other two don't know how to handle it.

The grief, anger and even guilt of the two girls is very well done.  Ella thanks that Astrid is still trying to reach out and wants to figure out why Astrid would kill herself.  Sydney just wants to move on and forget all about it.

The writing is excellent and the characters are wonderful.  Grab a box of tissues, there will be crying.

We all know that I love the fill-in novellas!  Sometimes...almost more than the actual novel!

This was a great chance to get to know Nick. He's always calm and good, so it was fun to see him 'off' and a little weird.

Nick's journey may be difficult, for himself and his brothers, but sometimes realizing what you really want IS difficult.  This is an excellent addition to the series!

The Name of the Star (Shades of London #1) by Maureen Johnson

The Name of the Star (Shades of London #1) by Maureen Johnson
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Publish Date:  September 29, 2011
Pages: 372
ISBN#978-0399256601

American teen Aurora (Rory) Deveaux moves to England from Louisiana with her parents.  She attends a boarding school, so she's pretty far from her parents.  It's a definite lifestyle change and Rory struggles to fit in, finding her niche.

There's a killer mimicking Jack the Ripper in London and the city is buzzing with speculation.

I did feel a bit annoyed by all the explanation of British words and things.  I mean, the HP books and movies pretty well taught us boarding school lingo.  Also, did we really need a menu/appetite update that frequently?

What pulled me into reading the book was the Jack the Ripper angle.  It's one of the most famous murder mysteries in the world, and there's virtually no hope of ever solving it.  The addition of a super secret society that can see and speak to ghosts was a nice twist.

Generally the characters and story were a bit boring.  It isn't a bad book, just boring.  Perhaps the second book will be better.

The Map of Time by Felix J. Palma

The Map of Time by Felix J. Palma
Publisher: Atria Books
Publish Date:  January 1, 2008
Pages: 613
ISBN# 978-1439167397

There are really three parts to this book, but they are all connected, so it's a lot of fun.

1 - Andrew is preparing to commit suicide to be with his one true love. His cousin, Charles tells him about this new company 'Murray's Time Travel', that allows you to travel into the future. Andrew wants to travel to the past to fix HIS issues.  Here we are introduced to H.G. Wells.

2 - Claire Haggerty is bored with everything and everybody. She wants to go to Murray's Time Travel so she can meet a hero from the future - he's in all the advertisements and there are statues of him at the company.

3 - H.G. Wells and his famous time travel machine story.

These sound like three different stories, but they are intertwined with H.G. Wells's story at their center.  It just keeps you reading.  I was entranced - the writing, the characters, the story connections - excellent!

Nobody by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Nobody by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Publish Date: January 22, 2013
Pages: 393
ISBN# 978-1606843214

There are people in this world that no one ever notices. People forget them as soon as they meet them. They are nobodies. The Institute tries to find these people when they are yuong and train them as assassins.

Then there are people who can easily influence others, but feel no emotion themselves.  These are Nulls.

Nix is a Nobody.  He's been trained since a small child that no one loves him, it's not possible, and he's learned a lot of ways to kill Nulls.

Claire is out of school for the summer and is moving through her free time being ignored.  Then one day an old man speaks to her - DIRECTLY to her. She's shocked, and amazed. A few days later she looks out her bedroom window to see Nix pointing a gun at her.  Nix and Claire are both shocked to realize that the other can not only see the other, but that they remember what they look like.

But Nix was sent to kill a Null, Clarie.  But Claire is a Nobody too.

There are a lot of twists in the story and it really keeps you involved.  Yes, there is some 'insta-love', but in this situation it works, these are two bleakly alone and lonely people.

Excellent writing and a great story!

The Thirteenth (Thirteenth #1) by Georgia Twynham

The Thirteenth (Thirteenth #1) by Georgia Twynham
Publisher: Gosvenor House Publishing Limited (self published)
Publish Date: November 20, 2009
Pages: 336
ISBN#: 978-1907211133

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Val is an ordinary 18 year old girl. But then she finds a new tattoo on her arm and she didn't put it there.

There are 13 chapters chock-full of action.  I liked that the story was so fast paced!

At the beginning I was a little put off, as the trials Val faced seemed too easily conquered and Val just jumped in seemingly without questioning too much. She trusted everyone immediately.

Val comes across as confident, witty and smart. I think her character could still be developed further, maybe in future books?

There were some types and a bit of stilted conversation, but a good editor could assist with that.

Plague in the Mirror by Deborah Noyes
Publisher:   Candlewick Press

From Goodreads:  It was meant to be a diversion — a summer in Florence with her best friend, Liam, and his travel-writer mom, doing historical research between breaks for gelato. A chance to forget that back in Vermont, May’s parents, and all semblance of safety, were breaking up. But when May wakes one night sensing someone in her room, only to find her ghostly twin staring back at her, normalcy becomes a distant memory. And when later she follows the menacing Cristofana through a portale to fourteenth-century Florence, May never expects to find safety in the eyes of Marco, a soulful painter who awakens in her a burning desire and makes her feel truly seen. The wily Cristofana wants nothing less of May than to inhabit each other’s lives, but with the Black Death ravaging Old Florence, can May’s longing for Marco’s touch be anything but madness? Lush with atmosphere both passionate and eerie, this evocative tale follows a girl on the brink of womanhood as she dares to transcend the familiar — and discovers her sensual power.

Untimed by Andy Gavin

Untimed by Andy Gavin
Publisher: Mascherato (self published)
Publish Date:  December 17, 2012
Pages: 325
ISBN# 978-1937945046

I received this book from the publicist in exchange for an honest review.

Charlie is a teen living in Philadelphia.  Charlie's biggest problem is that no one notices or remembers him.  Not even his neighbors, though they've lived next to each other for years.  Even his mom forgets his name. The illustrations are delightful - I love a book with illustrations!

Charlie gets into a fight with what appears to be a clockwork man and falls through a hole to 18th century London.  Here he meets another time traveler, Yvaine.  As they accidentally change time events and bounce back and forth in time (girls only travel one way, boys travel in another, they need to work in pairs) they both learn a lot - about themselves, each other and their abilities.

The characters are fairly well-developed.  I do feel that the dialogue needs some work.  There were times when it felt jerky or I thought 'no kid would say that, not in any century'.

You may recognize Andy Gavin's name.  He is the co-founder of Naughty Dog and co-created CRASH BANDICOOT and JAK & DEXTER.  He was a PhD candidate at M.I.T.'s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

I get why he's self publishing - the early work in video games and all.  But I think that a good agent and editor would really smooth out this book and it would fly off the shelves.

Viral Nation (Viral #1) by Shaunta Grimes

Viral Nation (Viral #1) by Shaunta Grimes
Publisher: Berkley Trade
Publish Date:  July 2, 2013
Pages: 320
ISBN# 978-0425261530

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:

After a virus claimed nearly the entire global population, the world changed. The United States splintered into fifty walled cities where the surviving citizens clustered to start over. The Company, which ended the plague by bringing a life-saving vaccine back from the future, controls everything. They ration the scant food and supplies through a lottery system, mandate daily doses of virus suppressant, and even monitor future timelines to stop crimes before they can be committed.

Brilliant but autistic, sixteen-year-old Clover Donovan has always dreamed of studying at the Waverly-Stead Academy. Her brother and caretaker, West, has done everything in his power to make her dream a reality. But Clover’s refusal to part with her beloved service dog denies her entry into the school. Instead, she is drafted into the Time Mariners, a team of Company operatives who travel through time to gather news about the future.

When one of Clover’s missions reveals that West’s life is in danger, the Donovans are shattered. To change West’s fate, they’ll have to take on the mysterious Company. But as its secrets are revealed, they realize that the Company’s rule may not be as benevolent as it seems. In saving her brother, Clover will face a more powerful force than she ever imagined and will team up with a band of fellow misfits and outsiders to incite a revolution that will change their destinies forever.

My Review:
So sixteen years ago there was a virus that wiped out most of the world's population.  The survivors were saved by an inoculation and now must receive regular shots.

The main character is sixteen year old Clover Donovan. She's smart, autistic and has a service dog. Clover wants to get into the Academy to better her life and hopefully her brothers too.  She's turned down after her interview due to her dog (she thinks) but is offered a position with the Time Mariners.  Time Mariners travel exactly two years into the future to get data to apprehend criminals before the crimes happen and to assist the government with how to get around any crisis.  It was interesting to see how Clover's autism affected her thinking, actions and reasoning.

West is her older brother - he takes care of Clover and works in the fields for the Company. He's also in love with Bridget.  West has to work the fields so that he can be Clover's guardian, but she thinks he just wasn't smart enough to get into the Academy.  Their father was recruited as an executioner for the Company and he lives in the barracks with the rest of the military.  He's in charge of executing people that are going to commit crimes.

Bridget and Jude have slightly minor parts, but I hope the next book will give us more on these two characters.  Bridget is the daughter of the Academy's Headmaster. Jude is an orphan at the Academy, he seems to have a connection with Clover.

The writing is excellent.  I was drawn into the story immediately and didn't want to put it down.  The world building was quick and efficient, but detailed enough to answer my questions.  This is a sure winner, grab it and head to the beach, pool or park - you won't be sorry!

A Midsummer Night's Scream by R.L. Stine
Publisher:  Fiewel & Friends

From Goodreads:  Everyone knows that Mayhem Manor is cursed. After production on the horror film was stopped due to a series of mysterious deaths, it became a Hollywood legend--which makes it perfect for Claire and her family. If they can successfully finish the film, it should be enough to save their ailing movie studio.

Sure, the old haunted house is creepy, and strange stuff has been happening, but this is Claire's chance. Her chance to become the movie star she's always dreamed and her chance to finally convince her friend Jake that she is girlfriend material. Of course, the fact that Jake thinks he's in love with her best friend, Delia, who is crushing hard on Jake's friend Shawn, who insists on following Claire around, could be a problem, but Claire is sure she can figure it out. After all, the course of true love never did run smooth.

But once shooting starts, "creepy and strange" morph into "bloody and deadly," as the lines between film and reality begin to blur...

Vortex (Insignia #2) by S.J. Kincaid
Publisher:  Katherine Tegen Books

From Goodreads:  The impossible was just the beginning. Now in their second year as superhuman government weapons-in-training at the Pentagonal Spire, Tom Raines and his friends are mid-level cadets in the elite combat corps known as the Intrasolar Forces. But as training intensifies and a moment arrives that could make or break his entire career, Tom’s loyalties are again put to the test.

Encouraged to betray his ideals and friendships for the sake of his country, Tom is convinced there must be another way. And the more aware he becomes of the corruption surrounding him, the more determined he becomes to fight it, even if he sabotages his own future in the process.

Drawn into a power struggle more dramatic than he has ever faced before, Tom stays a hyperintelligent step ahead of everyone, like the exceptional gamer he is—or so he believes. But when he learns that he and his friends have unwittingly made the most grievous error imaginable, Tom must find a way to outwit an enemy so nefarious that victory seems hopeless. Will his idealism and bravado cost him everything—and everyone that matters to him?

This Strange and Familiar Place (So Close to You #2) by Rachel Carter

Awaken (Abandon#3) by Meg Cabot
Publisher:  Point

From Goodreads:  Death has her in his clutches. She doesn’t want him to let go.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she’d be forced to live forever in the one place she’s always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.

But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.

If the balance between life and death isn’t fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce’s home back on earth will be wiped away. But there’s only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.

Shutdown (Glitch #3) by Heather Anastasiu
Publisher:  St. Martin's Griffin

From Goodreads:  The battle is all but over, and hope seems to be lost. Zoe and her fellow Resistance fighters are on the run, having lost their home, their protection, and their leader. They are outnumbered and outmatched by the powerful corporation that controls the world, and the cruel Chancellor is inches away from completing a scheme that would kill most of humanity. Zoe's only remaining option is to chase the impossible dream of upending the Link system, freeing the world from the hardware that controls their thoughts and emotions, and hope it will trigger a revolution.

The plot requires a nearly impossible mission to infiltrate the dangerous Community, and it is a task that Zoe must unfortunately complete alone. With challenges and surprises at every turn, nothing goes according to plan. Adrien's visions of the future now show two possible outcomes: one in which they succeed, and one in which humanity falls. It all lies in Zoe's hands.
