Skinny by Donna Cooner
From Goodreads: Find your voice.
Hopeless. Freak. Elephant. Pitiful. These are the words of Skinny, the vicious voice that lives inside fifteen-year-old Ever Davies’s head. Skinny tells Ever all the dark thoughts her classmates have about her. Ever knows she weighs over three hundred pounds, knows she’ll probably never be loved, and Skinny makes sure she never forgets it.
But there is another voice: Ever’s singing voice, which is beautiful but has been silenced by Skinny. Partly in the hopes of trying out for the school musical—and partly to try and save her own life—Ever decides to undergo a risky surgery that may help her lose weight and start over.
With the support of her best friend, Ever begins the uphill battle toward change. But demons, she finds, are not so easy to shake, not even as she sheds pounds. Because Skinny is still around. And Ever will have to confront that voice before she can truly find her own.

The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus #2) by Rick Riordan
From Goodreads: Annabeth is terrified. Just when she’s about to be reunited
with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp
Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo
fly in on the Argo II, she can’t blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship
is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo’s fantastical
creation doesn’t appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their
praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood
are coming in peace.
And that’s only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close— the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?
Annabeth’s biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he’s now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.

Breathe (Breathe #1) by Sarah Crossan
From Goodreads:
Inhale. Exhale.
Breathe.
Breathe.
Breathe . . .
The world is dead.
The survivors live under the protection of Breathe, the corporation that found a way to manufacture oxygen-rich air.
Alina
has been stealing for a long time. She's a little jittery, but not terrified. All she knows is that she's never been caught before. If she's careful, it'll be easy. If she's careful.
Quinn
should be worried about Alina and a bit afraid for himself, too, but even though this is dangerous, it's also the most interesting thing to happen to him in ages. It isn't every day that the girl of your dreams asks you to rescue her.
Bea
wants to tell him that none of this is fair; they'd planned a trip together, the two of them, and she'd hoped he'd discover her out here, not another girl.
And as they walk into the Outlands with two days' worth of oxygen in their tanks, everything they believe will be shattered. Will they be able to make it back? Will they want to?

Live Through This by Mindi Scott
From Goodreads: From the outside, Coley Sterling’s life seems pretty normal
. . . whatever that means. It’s not perfect—her best friend is seriously mad at
her and her dance team captains keep giving her a hard time—but Coley’s
adorable, sweet crush Reece helps distract her. Plus, she has a great family to
fall back on—with a mom and stepdad who would stop at nothing to keep her
siblings and her happy.
But Coley has a lot of secrets. She won’t admit—not even to herself—that her almost-perfect life is her own carefully-crafted façade. That for years she’s been burying the shame and guilt over a relationship that crossed the line. Now that Coley has the chance at her first real boyfriend, a decade’s worth of lies are on the verge of unraveling.

Ironskin (Ironskin #1) by Tina Connolly
From Goodreads: Jane Eliot wears an iron mask.
It’s the only way to contain the fey curse that scars her cheek. The Great War is five years gone, but its scattered victims remain—the ironskin.
When a carefully worded listing appears for a governess to assist with a "delicate situation"—a child born during the Great War—Jane is certain the child is fey-cursed, and that she can help.
Teaching the unruly Dorie to suppress her curse is hard enough; she certainly didn’t expect to fall for the girl’s father, the enigmatic artist Edward Rochart. But her blossoming crush is stifled by her own scars, and by his parade of women. Ugly women, who enter his closed studio...and come out as beautiful as the fey.
Jane knows Rochart cannot love her, just as she knows that she must wear iron for the rest of her life. But what if neither of these things is true? Step by step Jane unlocks the secrets of her new life—and discovers just how far she will go to become whole again.

Pirate Cinema by Cory Doctorow
From Goodreads: Trent McCauley is sixteen, brilliant, and
obsessed with one thing: making movies on his computer by reassembling footage
from popular films he downloads from the net. In the dystopian near-future Britain where Trent is growing up, this is more illegal
than ever; the punishment for being caught three times is that your entire
household’s access to the internet is cut off for a year, with no appeal.
Trent's too clever for that too happen. Except it does, and it nearly destroys his family. Shamed and shattered, Trent runs away to London, where he slowly he learns the ways of staying alive on the streets. This brings him in touch with a demimonde of artists and activists who are trying to fight a new bill that will criminalize even more harmless internet creativity, making felons of millions of British citizens at a stroke.
Things look bad. Parliament is in power of a few wealthy media conglomerates. But the powers-that-be haven’t entirely reckoned with the power of a gripping movie to change people’s minds….

Through To You by Emily Hainsworth
From Goodreads: Camden Pike has been grief-stricken since his girlfriend,
Viv, died. Viv was the last good thing in his life: helping him rebuild his
identity after a career-ending football injury, picking up the pieces when his
home life shattered, and healing his pain long after the meds wore off. And
now, he’d give anything for one more glimpse of her. But when Cam
makes a visit to the site of Viv’s deadly car accident, he sees some kind of
apparition. And it isn’t Viv.
The apparition’s name is Nina, and she’s not a ghost. She’s a girl from a parallel world, and in this world, Viv is still alive. Cam can’t believe his wildest dreams have come true. All he can focus on is getting his girlfriend back, no matter the cost. But things are different in this other world: Viv and Cam have both made very different choices, things between them have changed in unexpected ways, and Viv isn’t the same girl he remembers. Nina is keeping some dangerous secrets, too, and the window between the worlds is shrinking every day. As Cam comes to terms with who this Viv has become and the part Nina played in his parallel story, he’s forced to choose—stay with Viv or let her go—before the window closes between them once and for all.

It would be *beyond* awesome if you could feature The Assassin's Curse by Cassandra R Clarke! http://strangechemistrybooks.com/books/the-assassins-curse-by-cassandra-rose-clarke/
ReplyDeleteThe Mark of Athena is definitely a must-buy in this lot. Sorry for the other books, but Rick Riordan simply overshadows them all.
ReplyDeleteThe Savage Fortress by Sarwat Chadda kinda looks interesting, though. I might check it out. I could share it to youngsters in our readings.
