I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Madeleien is the youngest person to win the Archibald Prize for portraiture.  She really wants her cousin Tyler to sit for her, so she sneaks off to his apartment to draw him.  She really couldn't have picked a worse time.  All over the world, in large cities and towns, giant spires have appeared and threw off a dust.

Madeleine is in an underground station when it happens, but she makes it aboveground finally.  She's covered in the dust from the spires. She develops patches of blue skin covered with star constellations on her skin. She ends up finding others who have been exposed and joins up with them.

The characters are multi-cultural, which is nice.  The author didn't use the typical stereotypes either.  It's just who the people are.  Most of the characters are well fleshed-out, however, Madeleine isn't that believable. She didn't really experience any losses or anything unusual, yet she was the main character.  Some of the others experienced a lot more and didn't get that much time.

There were a few places that had very emotional scenes that were hard to believe and overall the book could use some more editing, in my opinion.  It is a decent story, however, and the editing concerns aren't that huge, I'm just picky.
