Love is seen as a disease. It makes you act goofy and take chances. Everyone is afraid of it and everyone undergoes a brain surgery to prevent 'catching' it. The surgery happens when you're 18, after a series of tests to see how you're currently doing. It's called 'Delirium'.
Lena's mother had the surgery several times, but couldn't be cured. She finally committed suicide. Lena's grown up looked down upon and feeling disgraced. She can't wait to be cured.
The writing is excellent, I was on an emotional rollercoaster! Lena is a great character. She goes from being biddable to being a rebel. It's not a quick change, but an honest one.
Alex - the love interest. A bit more grown-up, but he finds it hard to say no to Lena.
Hana - Lena's best friend. First Lena thinks they're drifting apart, only to find that they're just as strong as ever.
The only thing that bothered me is that there's a lot of talk about this 'cure', but I think it would have been scarier to know exactly what is done. Maybe in the next book.
We've heard it's a surprisingly good series, although fans seem to have mixed reactions to certain specific events in the sequels. Did you know it has been optioned for TV?
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I didn't! I was actually surprised that I like it.
